Should have chose a topo map, communication and proper footwear. But yeah, prayer works too, I guess. I credit Alabama with her rescue. That and getting lost in a moist environment.

They found her car and cell phone in a parking lot. Some people are determined to kill themselves.

I’m heading out on a 4-5 day trip on Monday. I just got finished making sure my water filter and stove work (after doing annual maintenance on the stove). I’ll have backups for both of them, too (tablets and a smaller stove), even though the stove is highly repairable. This time I’m even bringing two different maps (one digital).

The thing that I’m thinking about adding a redundancy for that   I don’t have right now is first aid kit. How important do you think that is? I was just thinking it’d suck if the pack with the first aid kit in it got lost off a cliff or something.

I definitely felt like Darwining the assholes helicoptering over me as I hiked into the Waimea Canyon.

I carry a fully stocked first aid kit with me everywhere, and have stitched myself up with it on several occasions. However , first aid kit is a but dependent on your skill level. I received EMS training in high school, have a BS in Health Sciences (minimally useful), and have taken combat trauma courses.  Based on what you already have, I’d make sure you have antiseptics and butterfly bandages.

As an aside, I have no problem dying in the wilderness, so my load out is lighter than most (I have a good life insurance policy for my girls).

this story doesn’t mention prayer. sounds very typical - short day hike turns serious and simple prep that didn’t seem important suddenly is. also typical of survivors is choosing to live and how important that is.

I’ve been in similar situations though less sever. it's easy to shoulda woulda these cases.

Based on her being a yoga instructor (one of my wife’s side gigs is ‘yoga instructor’), I’m guessing she got in a fight with her fiancé and took off. No way a yoga instructor would head into the Hawaiian wilderness without Insta-proof unless she was pissed.

Yes, very typical, we once had six or so people die at mountain parks within city limits. Modern people are very ill equipped to deal with the elements.

From the BBC video (which was Kinja’d):

“I have the most gratitude, and respect and appreciation, I can’t even put it into words, for the people that have helped me, for the people that have prayed for me, for the people that were at base camp...”

I’ll concede there are a lot of things that can go sideways in the wilderness. However, yoga instructor, Maui, poor footwear choice, cell phone left in car and vacation with fiancé lead me to believe this was a highly avoidable situation. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for people dying in the wilderness, but don’t claim it was up to your own self preservation or supernatural forces when you’re saved by a helicopter. Ya fucked up because of dumb choices, own it, and encourage like minded people to stay in their comfortable suburbs and keep practicing yoga and religion.

Unless she’s deep enough into the yoga-verse to take a journey sans online connection.

And promptly talk about it on social media for the next month

No American yogi is deep into anything. Indian yogis are all dudes wrapping their dicks around sticks.

Yeah it’s mostly antiseptics and bandages. I don’t have any skill in this area.

I usually have a pretty heavy loadout: I’m kind of a glamppacker. This trip even more so since I’ll only be carrying the pack on the first and last days (I’m taking my parents, and my Mom has ankle problems,  so this trip is as easy as I can possibly make it).

“deep”

I’m pretty disenfranchised, to the point that I really respect the (rare) American teachers who are willing to admit they’re just into the physical aspects without trying to sell fake spirituality. Nothing wrong with wanting to do crazy handbalancing contortions just because it looks cool !

“ Oh, you found a connection with the earth that you’re blessed to share with the world after  attending your $10,000 200hr YTT course in Bali? What’s that, you also started your own herbal remedy company based off of the emotions of the moon, of which you’ll offer to your students with a 10% discount code ?”

Still a desperately needed net positive on overall health and fitness in the country, so I should just shut up and be happy!
